Privacy policy
In short: Stargazr has no accounts and no user database. It stores nothing about you on our side. A location is only ever used if you hand it over, is rounded before it leaves your browser and rounded again before we ask anyone else for a forecast, and is not written to any database of ours. Two other companies are involved in delivering the site: Cloudflare, which serves and protects it, and Google, whose advertising appears on article pages. Both of them see things we do not.

Who runs Stargazr
Stargazr is operated in California by Oak and Main Developers LLC, which also runs a small portfolio of other single-purpose utility sites, including Eclipsor. Where we link to a site in that portfolio we say so, so you can tell an editorial recommendation from a self-referral.
Mailing address: 2108 N St., Sacramento, CA 95816For anything on this page, or to exercise a privacy right, write to privacy@stargazr.io.
What Stargazr itself stores
No accounts, no sign-ups, no newsletter, no contact form, and no database of visitors. We set no cookies of our own and we run no analytics product of our own.
Two things are stored, and both live in your browser, not on a server:
- Your sky-theme choice (night, dawn, day, dusk or auto), so the page looks the same next time. Clearing your site data removes it.
- Nothing else. Locations are not saved between visits; every visit starts by asking again.
To be exact about a phrase this policy used to get wrong: saying we collect "nothing that identifies you" was too broad. We hold no profile and no record tied to you — but your IP address is necessarily visible to the company that serves the site, and Google's advertising can set identifiers in your browser. Those are set out below.
Location
To tell you what is overhead where you are, Stargazr needs a position. There are two ways to give it one, and you can decline both and still read every guide on the site.
- "Check tonight where I am" asks your browser for permission. If you allow it, the coordinates are rounded to three decimal places (about 110 m) before they leave the page, and sent to Stargazr's own edge service. That service rounds them again to two decimal places (about 1.1 km) before asking MET Norway for a cloud forecast for the area. The request identifies this site, not you.
- Typing a place matches what you type against a list of 12,000 places that is downloaded to your browser and searched there. Nothing you type in that field is sent to us or to anyone else — not the query, not the place you pick. Only the resulting coordinates go to the forecast lookup, on the same rounding terms as above.
We do not write coordinates to any database of ours, and we do not build a location history. Forecast responses are cached at the network edge by rounded coordinate — a cache keyed to an area, not to a person.
The custom star chart works differently and is worth calling out: the coordinates, date, time and any caption text you enter are sent to our edge renderer to draw the poster, and the finished image is cached at the edge for 24 hours so a repeat of the same chart is not re-rendered. Do not put anything private in the caption fields.
Who else is involved
This is the complete list of parties your browser contacts, and what each one gets. Two former entries — Google Fonts and the esm.sh module CDN — were removed in August 2026; the typeface and the astronomy library are now served from this domain, so neither company sees your requests any more.
| Who | Why | What they get | Your control |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cloudflare | Serves and protects every page and runs our edge code | Your IP address and ordinary request metadata, in short-lived operational and security logs. Cloudflare also tells our edge code which country you are in, so we know whether advertising consent rules apply — we see the country, never the address it came from. Depending on configuration Cloudflare may also run its own privacy-preserving traffic measurement, which does not use cookies and does not track people across sites. | Necessary to deliver the site. Cloudflare's privacy policy |
| Google AdSense | Advertising on article pages | The address of the page you are on, your IP address, and cookies or similar identifiers it sets in your browser to serve and measure ads. We never see any of it. | See your choices below |
| MET Norway and NOAA | Cloud forecast; aurora and space-weather data | Nothing from you. Your browser never contacts them. Our edge service asks on your behalf, using coordinates rounded to about 1.1 km and identifying this site rather than you. | Not applicable |
Advertising is loaded only on article pages. It is not loaded on this page, on About, on Contact, on the section hubs, or on the Live sky and Custom chart tools.
Your privacy and cookie choices
Before any Google advertising code runs, Stargazr signals that advertising storage, advertising personalisation and analytics storage are all denied. Advertising can only widen that if a certified consent tool asks you and you agree.
If you are in the EEA, the UK or Switzerland, Stargazr does not load Google advertising at all. Serving ads to you there requires a Google-certified consent platform, and until one is verified for this site the honest thing to do is show you no ads rather than ask for a consent we cannot properly record. Your country is determined at the network edge from your connection, not from a cookie or a stored profile.
Everywhere else, you can review or switch off personalised advertising at any time in Google My Ad Center, and read how Google uses data from sites that use its services at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites. Blocking third-party cookies in your browser, or using an ad blocker, breaks nothing on this site — every tool here works without advertising.
To clear what Stargazr itself has stored, clear this site's data in your browser. That removes the theme preference, which is all there is.
Retention
We keep nothing to retain. Cloudflare's operational and security logs are held under its own retention policy, not ours, and we do not query them to build any picture of a visitor. Forecast and chart responses cached at the edge expire on their own — forecasts within minutes to half an hour, chart images within 24 hours — and are keyed to coordinates and parameters, not to a person.
Your rights
Depending on where you live you may have rights to access, correct, delete, restrict, object to or appeal the use of personal data about you, and to complain to a data-protection authority. In practice there is very little here to act on: we hold no account, no profile and no stored location. Write to privacy@stargazr.io and we will answer honestly about what does and does not exist. For anything Google holds about your advertising profile, use the Google links above — that data is Google's, not ours, and only Google can act on it.
Children
Stargazr is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect anything from them. Since there are no accounts and no submissions, there is nothing for a child to hand over.
Changes
If this policy changes, the "last reviewed" date at the top changes with it. It was rewritten on 20 August 2026 following an external audit, to remove several statements the site could not support: that only Google saw anything, that a typed-location fallback existed, and that nothing identifying was involved anywhere. The typed-location fallback now exists; the other two sentences were simply wrong and are gone.
